Moxibustion is a Traditional Chinese Medicine therapy that has been used in Asia
for thousands of years, predating even acupuncture.
Moxibustion uses a natural herb called mugwort (Artemesia Vulgaris), also known as moxa, which practitioners burn either indirectly or directly on a patient’s skin to stimulate the acupuncture meridians beneath. During moxibustion, the patient will experience a pleasant heating sensation that penetrates deep into the body, restoring the balance and flow of blood and the vital energy called Qi.
Acupuncture and moxibustion complement each other to form one mode of therapy, much as two strands of fiber intertwine to form a rope.
Moxibustion is most commonly used in conjunction with acupuncture and other Traditional Chinese Medicine treatment methods to promote a better flow of blood and Qi.
Rather than dispersing over the skin surface, the heat from the burning moxa penetrates deeply into underlying tissues. Therefore, moxibustion is very effective in reducing pain and inflammation.
In particular, the combination of moxibustion and acupuncture treatments can be very effective for many diseases and conditions including back pain, muscle stiffness, headaches, migraines, tendonitis, arthritis, digestive disorders, anxiety, and female health problems such as menstrual cramps, irregular periods and infertility.
Clinically, moxibustion increases blood cell counts, especially that of white blood cells. I have used it with astonishing results for people undergoing chemotherapy, as well as those staving off infections, removing scar tissue, and strengthening overall immunity.
Many practitioners of Chinese Medicine have very little awareness of the full scope of applications for moxibustion. When performed by a skilled practitioner, moxibustion can be used for almost any condition, and thus greatly enhances any acupuncture treatment. As with all of our services, we will assess your condition and your needs, and develop an individual care and treatment plan specifically designed to help you achieve the maximum results.
