Does acupuncture hurt?
It is a common misconception that acupuncture hurts. You may experience some minor sensations as the needles enter the skin. We use very fine, disposable stainless steel needles, and the insertion is usually very gentle and shallow, oftentimes not even penetrating the skin. Many patients find the treatment very relaxing and some even fall asleep during the treatment.
Shonishin pediatric therapy utilizes techniques that are non-invasive and extremely gentle, promoting a deep relaxation that many children find enjoyable.
How long is an acupuncture treatment?
Your initial visit will include your health history and your acupuncture treatment and takes about two hours. Follow-up visits are typically around 55 minutes.

Your initial appointment will consist of complete health history and physical exam. Comprehensive treatment will follow the intake and may consist of any combination of acupuncture, cupping, and moxibustion. Every procedure will be explained clearly and thoroughly before the treatment.
Chinese herbal formulas enhance the treatment effect and will be prescribed depending on your health history and current medication use. Other recommendations including diet, exercise, and lifestyle modifications may also be prescribed as part of your treatment plan.
How do I prepare for acupuncture?
Please do not come to your acupuncture appointment on an empty stomach. It is better to have a light snack or meal before coming to your treatment. Wear loose clothing that allows easy access to your abdomen, areas slightly above your elbows and knees, and your whole back.

This depends on the severity of the condition and whether it is a chronic or acute condition. You may notice effects with the very first treatment, but patients generally start seeing changes in as little as three to four treatments. However, the results may vary from case to case.
In general, the more chronic the condition, the more long-term consistent treatments are needed for the best results. Acute conditions can be resolved quickly if treatment is started soon after onset. Certain conditions may require Chinese herbal medicine in addition to acupuncture treatment. Once significant improvement occurs, maintenance treatment can be planned monthly or quarterly to prevent relapse and support general health and well-being.
Do you accept insurance?
We don’t accept insurance, but depending on the insurance carrier and policy, some patients can submit their receipts and get reimbursed for their visits. You can call your insurance company to find out if they cover your treatments and if a doctor’s referral is needed. We provide superbills and the necessary documentation and diagnosis codes to help you with this process.
The costs of acupuncture and herbal medicine are generally considered tax-deductible as medical expenses. Acupuncture is also covered under many Flex Spending Plans. Some plans may even reimburse you for the cost of your Chinese herbal prescription. Please check with your Flex Plan administrator for specific coverage.
